Is Your Contract Process Costing You Money?
4 min read — Taylor Commercial Intelligence
Many organisations can see the legal fees and procurement time. Far fewer can see the wider commercial cost of a slow or poorly owned contract process.
The hidden costs of slow contracts
When a contract takes three months to agree instead of three weeks, the cost isn't just the extra lawyer hours. Every week of delay represents:
- Revenue delayed — if the contract enables a new customer, product or supplier arrangement, every week of delay is a week of unrealised value
- Opportunity cost — senior people spending time on contract administration instead of more valuable commercial work
- Relationship damage — customers and suppliers frustrated by slow, bureaucratic processes
- Competitive disadvantage — competitors who can contract faster win more business
Where the cost hides
In our experience, the most common sources of hidden contract cost are:
- Approval bottlenecks — contracts sitting in inboxes waiting for sign-off from people who don't understand why they're being asked
- Rework loops — the same issues being negotiated multiple times because the first round wasn't documented or communicated
- Template neglect — using outdated, inconsistent or inappropriate templates that create unnecessary negotiation
- Handoffs between functions — contracts passing between legal, commercial, procurement and operations with no single owner
The cost is rarely visible in one budget line. It shows up as delayed revenue, repeated meetings, supplier frustration, lost leverage, unnecessary legal escalation and senior people spending time on decisions that should already have a clear route.
What good looks like
It is about clarity: who owns the commercial position, who needs to approve what, which terms are standard, where negotiation is genuinely needed, and when an issue should be escalated.
If your contract process feels slow, expensive or out of control, the problem probably isn't the people — it's the process design. And process design is something you can fix.
